Osprey nests on cell tower (problem / solution)
PROBLEMS CAUSED BY OSPREYS NESTING ON CELL TOWERS
• Bird droppings corrode tower metal and present fall risk to tower climbers.
• Nest sticks falling from tower can injure workers or damage sensitive equipment below tower.
• Bulky nests built on equipment heat sinks can cause equipment malfunction, overheating, and potential system failure.
• Federal regulations prevent worker access to towers with active nests during the 7-month raptor nesting season.
• Restricted access means delayed repairs, maintenance and upgrades.
• Nests can present potential fire hazards or other safety hazard (e.g., obstructing tower marking and FAA beacon lighting).
• Nesting birds entangled in twine/string/fishing line brought to the nest can cause public alarm, resulting in pressure for
tower maintenance crews to free the entangled bird and remove foreign material from nest and tower.
